Description
The Upper Middle Fork Trail is an 8.1-mile point-to-point trail in Kings Canyon National Park. Remote and rugged, it offers both beauty and challenge. Between Simpson Meadow in the west and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in the east, the trail traverses along the rushing waters of the Middle Fork Kings River. Often, this trail is used as part of a larger loop or multi-day backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada. Parts of the trail are minimally maintained, as it is located in a remote section of Kings Canyon National Park. It is important for visitors to assume that some sections of the trail will require bush-whacking through overgrown and thorny vegetation. It is recommended for hikers with experience. From Simpson Meadow, the Upper Middle Fork Trail follows a gently graded ascent with scenic views of the Middle Fork Kings River. Although this trail is described from west to east, it can be completed either way.Check the park service's website for trail conditions and water levels before planning a large loop. Waters at the Palisade Creek / Middle Fork Junction may be swift and high during an average snow year, but they can still be crossed carefully. However, a heavy snow year could make crossing Palisade Creek dangerous and difficult. This junction is used to connect the Upper Middle Fork with the Pacific Crest Trail. You can find more information at https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/trailcond.htm.PERMITS AND CAMPINGWilderness permits are required for overnight camping in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Fees and regulations may vary depending on the time of year (quota season vs. non-quota season). For updated information about wilderness permits please visit: https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/wilderness_permits.htm.
