Description
State Lakes Loop + Horseshoe Lake is a 7.6-mile backcountry loop trail located in Kings Canyon National Park. Located in the backcountry, this trail is rugged, remote, and only accessible by foot via Simpson Meadow Trail. Although this loop is often used as a side trip along the Simpson Meadow Trail, it is breathtaking enough to be its own destination. There are plenty of opportunities to find peace and quiet on the State Lakes Loop with its secluded alpine lakes and seldom traveled trail. Horseshoe Lake is another secluded alpine lake that is easily accessible from the State Lakes Loop. The 1-mile trail leading to Horseshoe Lake can be easily removed for anyone in need of shortening the length of the trip. Both the State Lakes and Horseshoe Lake provide great opportunities for secluded backcountry camping under the stars (see below for permit information). Here, the route is completed in a counterclockwise direction, but either direction would work.SAMPLE BACKPACKING ITINERARY (STARTING FROM ROADS END)Day 1: Copper Creek Trail to Lower Tent MeadowDay 2: Lower Tent Meadow to Simpson Meadow TrailDay 3: State Lakes LoopDay 4: Return to Roads EndPERMITS AND CAMPINGWilderness permits are required for overnight camping in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks.
