This trail can be accessed either from primitive campsites on the Green River or from the Jones Hole Fish Hatchery. The hatchery is accessed via a 47-mile drive on paved roads north of the Quarry Visitor Center. This road is normally plowed and kept open year round. Ample parking and restrooms are available at the hatchery. The trailhead on the Green River is used primarily by river rafters.

From the hatchery, the trail is a very gradual downhill all the way to the river. About 1.5 miles down from the hatchery, the trail passes a very nice set of Fremont Culture petroglyphs (there is a short side trail that takes you right to them). Just below the petroglyphs is a junction with a signed junction with the Island Park Trail which you can follow for 0.25 miles to see Ely Creek Falls.
Past the petroglyphs and trail junction, the Jones Creek Trail continues its gradual descent to the Green River in Whirlpool Canyon. Along here the trail comes close to the creek in places (at great swimming holes on hot days) and alternates between being in a shady forest or out in an open meadow (with wildflowers in season). The trail ends in some primitive camping areas and day use areas for river rafters. A visit to the falls and petroglyphs is a popular hike for river rafters stopping at the Jones Hole campsites.
