Crystal Lake Campground to Copter Ridge

Crystal Lake Campground to Copter Ridge is a 12.8-mile out-and-back route located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. This hike offers stunning vistas, challenging terrain, and the rewarding experience of reaching the remote Copter Ridge, one of the Sierra Club Hundred Peaks List peaks. It is a challenging route with an overall elevation gain of 4,662 feet, making it an ideal route for experienced hikers seeking a full day of adventure in the Angeles National Forest. The route consists mostly of singletrack trail, with some rocky sections that require careful footing and some areas, specifically the trail leading to Copter Ridge, where the trail may be faint or overgrown.TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Starting from Crystal Lake Campground, this hike begins on a well-maintained trail that leads you through a picturesque forest setting as you gently ascend to the Windy Gap saddle. From Windy Gap, you will head south on the iconic Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). After about 4.3 miles, you'll leave the PCT and follow a use trail towards South Mount Hawkins, a bonus peak on this route and another Sierra Club Hundred Peaks peak. Head west from South Mount Hawkins. The route then follows along the ridge, with several ups and downs, leading you to the remote and scenic Copter Ridge peak.At the summit of Copter Ridge, you are rewarded with expansive views of the Angeles National Forest and beyond.
