Description
The Big Rock Trail is a short, easily accessible loop perfect for hikers of all skill levels. Although the trail is less than a mile long, the shortness does not take away from any of the beauty. The main features along the trail are the rapid cascading falls of Gold Mine Creek. As the creek leaves Fort Mountain Lake, it descends a massive 2,000 feet, the beginning of which is visible along this trail. Wildflowers abound in the springtime. The terrain is much more challenging than the nearby Fort Mountain Lake Trail. There are sections of the trail comprised of large boulders that stair-step up and down next to the creek. Nevertheless, those new to hiking should not be discouraged from venturing out on this tremendous trail. Simply take your time and donat expect to finish hiking the loop in less than an hour. Children will love hiking this trail, making it a perfect family-friendly activity. More experienced hikers will also enjoy the beauty and the sights along the trail. The Big Rock Trail connects to the Gahuti Backcountry Trail, allowing the more adventurous to branch out and explore more of the wonders of Fort Mountain State Park.
