Description
The Wetland Overlook Trail is a 0.6-mile-long loop in Lake Carlos State Park near Alexandria, Minnesota. The trail has interpretive signs about the flora and fauna present in the area. The trail is a mix of mowed grass and packed dirt. The trail takes hikers through hardwood forests, prairies and by wetland habitat. The trail leads to an overlook of Schumacher's Slough. Look for water birds here. The start of Wetland Overlook Trail is located right by County Road 62 near the entrance to the park. Unfortunately, there is no parking here, so visitors will need to park near the Lower Campground and begin their hike from there. From the parking area, head north walking on the road towards the park office for 0.2 miles, shortly before the intersection of the park entrance road there is a trail that runs parallel to the entrance road. Take a right onto this trail. Take this trail for about a tenth of a mile and cross County Road 62. After crossing the road, you will see the trailhead sign for the Wetland Overlook Trail.Take a right at the first trail intersection and follow the trail through woods and prairie habitat for about a quarter of a mile. Here you will see a sign marked with a V; take a left here. After a very short distance take another left at intersection W. After about a tenth of a mile, the overlook platform of Schumacher's Slough will be on the right. After taking in the views here, continue for another two tenths of a mile or so back to County Road 62 staying to the left at intersections U and S. From there, retrace your steps back to the parking area. The total length of this hike from the parking area is 1.3 miles. The trail is quite easy with some gently rolling hills. Dogs are allowed off the trail, but must be on a leash. Those looking for a longer hike can take the Large Tooth Aspen Trail at intersection V.A fee is required to enter the park. A Minnesota state park day use or annual permit can be purchased at the park office.
