The Little Falls-Slough Gundy Scenic Area Trail takes hikers to a scenic stretch of the South Fork of the Flambeau River. The parking area for this trail is located 9 miles north of Hawkins, Wisconsin on County Road M. Look for the sign on the west side of the road. The hike is 1.5 miles long, but can be shortened significantly by only visiting Little Falls. The trail starts as a wide gravel path. There are vault toilets near the trailhead. The trail quickly comes to an intersection. The trail to the right leads to Slough Gundy and to the left heads to Little Falls. Head right here to visit the Slough Gundy rapids first. The trail remains a wide gravel path for about another 0.2 miles. Here the trail crosses a boulder strewn area which is a part of the Flambeau River during high water. After crossing the boulders, the trail is narrow but easy to follow. Catch views of the Slough Gundy rapids as you head north. The trail ends at the north end of the island with a scenic view of the river above the rapids. Retrace your steps back to the boulder area.Once you have crossed the boulders head south on a narrow path along the river. It is about 0.3 miles to Little Falls. Little Falls is a 7-foot drop on both sides of a small rocky island. After exploring Little Falls, take the wide gravel path back to the parking lot.During periods of higher water conditions, you may see whitewater kayakers running this challenging section of the South Fork of the Flambeau River.
