Description
Begin at the Sugar Hill visitor center. From the parking area, head east to the locked vehicle gate. A small person gate is unlocked to provide access for pedestrians and bicycles. Follow the dirt path as it winds through the sand dunes for 5 miles. Along the way, you'll pass bird nesting areas (keep out!) and may see snakes, sand crabs, and a large variety of birds. Scrub brush and sand are the main features on the ground. You'll also pass a small pond on the left. Eventually, the trail will ease left and reach the point. Excellent fishing can be done here (Florida salt water license required). I think the best return hike is via the beach on the gulf side of the island. It provides a change of scenery, and the water is typically crystal clear on a calm day, enabling you to see ocean life swimming along the shore. Dolphins, rays, and lots of fish are typical of this area. Continue west on the beach until you reach the Sugar Hill visitor center.
