Description
This route to Acra Point begins at the Black Dome Mountain Trailhead along Big Hollow Road and climbs steadily through dense hardwood forest on the Black Dome Range Trail. At the signed intersection with the Escarpment Trail, turn right to follow the ridgeline south toward Acra Point. The terrain becomes rockier and more rugged with sustained elevation gain through boreal forest as you approach the open vista. From Acra Point, expansive views open up across the Hudson Valley and to the nearby Blackhead Range. Hikers can return the way they came or complete a longer route using connector trails like the Batavia Kill Trail. Seasonal streams may offer water along the way, but all sources should be treated. This trail is accessible year-round, though snow and ice may linger at higher elevations into spring. Rocky footing, variable trail conditions, and potential bear activity require preparation, especially for those venturing in shoulder seasons. The reward is a quiet summit ridge with striking Catskill scenery.
