Description
North Point is a uniquely situated peak on the shoulder of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River Valley. It provides excellent views both over the escarpment toward the Hudson and into the green expanse of the Catskills. While entering the North-South Lake Campground offers easier access to the summit, it does add a day use fee. Rather, park just outside of the park at the expansive parking area, and cross the road to begin the your hike. The trail rambles over rolling terrain, crossing a handful of well-marked intersections. Turn left at the first, following red trail markers. Take another sharp left at the second intersection, this time following blue trail markers. Narrow boardwalks traverse the boggiest sections. The trail can be easy to lose at the second intersection. Keep your eyes peeled for the blue trail markers and follow the path of least resistance. The trail traverses up a steep jumble of rocks before leveling out on a dirt path lined with long grass. The trail climbs up and over a series of ledges before flattening once again, this time on bedrock slabs. Almost immediately the view unfolds, and the summit is within sight. It is large and flat, with excellent views. For more seclusion, continue along the cliff edge and pick one of many smaller overlooks. Here you will find views of North-South Lake, the Hudson River, and the surrounding Catskill Mountains. Most striking is the abrupt escarpment to the east as the Catskills fall to meet the Hudson River. Trails to the summit of North Mountain and Artists Rock continue from the main overlook, but most hikers will return via the route they ascended.
