Forest Discovery Trail

This trail can be accessed most directly from the Arboretum's western parking lot or mixed in with the numerous other short trails for a longer option. You'll find the trail is well marked with posts. This route is mapped from the western parking area going counterclockwise. To follow this route head south from the parking lot and turn to the right whereupon you'll immediately start ascending the hillside into forest managed to encourage large trees. The mossy forest is filled with "nurse trees" and snags that provide abundant habitat for insects and birds. At about a third of a mile you'll reach the top of this trail's ascent at a four-way intersection. Head to your left/south to stay on this trail. From here you'll roughly follow the hillside contour with a small descent to another intersection with a forest road. Cross the road and begin descending gradually with the occasional stair to help. At around one mile the trail will turn back to the west, ascend briefly, and then descend to the northeast again. From here a few views of the Willamette Valley can be had over private property. Finally, pass the Maritime Meander Trail by staying to the north/left to complete this loop.
