Description
The Military Ridge State Trail passes through some beautiful farmland in the driftless landscape, especially towards the west as you near Dodgeville. The driftless landscape is characteristic of areas that were not covered by glaciers during the last Ice Age and leads to gently rolling hills. The trail also passes through a number of forested and wetland areas. The trail itself is mostly crushed limestone except for some pavement sections in Fitchburg close to Madison. The Military Ridge Trail is one of the earlier rail-trail conversions, dating from the 1980's and it connects with several other long distance trails in Madison and with the Cheese Country Recreation Trail via a spur from Dodgeville to Mineral Point. Military Ridge State Trail also connects with a number of mountain biking trail systems including the Seminole and Quarry Ridge trail systems and trails in Blue Mounds and Governor Dodge state parks.
