Description
The Tumbled Rocks Trail is a 1.1-mile-long trail in Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo, Wisconsin. The Tumbled Rocks Trail may be Devil's Lake's most popular trail as it is an easy hike that runs through a boulder field (or talus slope) along the western shoreline of Devil's Lake. The talus slopes are full of impressive boulder-sized broken quartzite rocks that fell from the bluffs above. This trail is paved in asphalt, but the pavement is in rough shape and would not accommodate a wheelchair. This trail can be accessed from the north end of the lake by heading to the west end of the beach area. Look for the brown Tumbled Rocks Trail trailhead sign. This trail can also be accessed from the south end via Cottage Grove Road which is off South Lake Road near the southwest "corner" of the lake. The trail actually runs on Cottage Grove Road; those hiking from the north may want to skip the road portion of the trail.Hikers can enjoy beautiful views of Devil's Lake as the trail meanders through the lower West Bluff talus field. Since the trail is quite flat and the views along the trail are spectacular, the trail can be quite crowded, especially on weekends. This trail is also used by anglers who navigate through the rocks to fish from the shore. The Tumbled Rocks Trail also offers adult swimming opportunities; swimmers find huge boulders at the water's edge around the halfway point to use as prime jumping and diving spots. One popular diving rock is known as Rock 8. Those intending to jump or dive must always first test the water depth to avoid serious injury. The Tumbled Rocks Trail is most often hiked as an out-and-back jaunt, but the trail can be paired with the West Bluff Trail to create a loop. Dogs are allowed on the Tumbled Rocks Trail but must be kept on a leash that is no longer than 8 feet in length. Since the Tumbled Rocks Trail is located in a state park, a fee must be paid to enter the park. A day use or annual permit can be purchased at the park office.
