Description
Elephant Mountain, located in the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area in Arizona, is a striking natural landmark known for its rugged beauty and challenging terrain. Situated near Cave Creek, this mountain is named for its unique shape, which resembles the profile of an elephant when viewed from a distance. The conservation area, which spans over 2,000 acres, is rich in Sonoran Desert flora and fauna, offering hikers a chance to experience the raw, untamed beauty of Arizona's desert landscape. The trail for Elephant Mountain is a beautiful 7.2 mile out and back loop with moderate elevation gain. The trail starts out of the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. The day use fee is $2.00 and it is cash only so hikers need to be prepared to pay the fee at the staffed kiosk. The trail starts out meandering through the desert and after a half mile the trail crosses Cave Creek and then at 0.7miles the trail splits and hikers should follow the Tortuga Trail. A half mile later hikers will follow the Elephant Mountain Trail which is the trail that will loop around the mountain. From this point on hikers will be exposed to the sun and have the most elevation gain in the next portion of the trail. Once hikers start on the Elephant Mountain Trail they will gain roughly 700ft over the next mile as they reach the saddle to the peak. The trail is closed to the summit but hikers choosing to proceed following the foot trails will do so at their own risk. After summiting hikers will continue to take the Elephant Mountain Trail to the Spur Cross Trail that will take hikers back to the trailhead. This trail is a beautiful way to explore the Cave Creek Area, but they should be aware that there is no water at the trailhead and should come prepared. Overall, Elephant Mountain at Spur Cross Ranch is a gem in Arizona's vast desert landscape, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, challenging hiking, and historical intrigue. It's a place where one can truly connect with the rugged spirit of the Sonoran Desert.
