Description
Kanab makes a great base camp for exploring the Arizona Strip and the area east of Zion National Park. A little like Moab, Kanab has a funky outdoors vibe and all the basic services you might need. It also has some nice trails the are very convenient to the town, including the Squaw Trail with the best views of Kanab itself, the Utah and Arizona border area, and a surprise bonus at the top! The trailhead is literally at the north edge of town near some baseball diamonds, but it immediately heads into the red rock canyons and rises above the town. The trail winds in and out of the folds of the Vermillion Cliffs and climbs relentlessly, offering increasingly panoramic views of the town. There are some fun drop offs and many picturesque rocks to climb and pose for photos. The top of the cliffs look impossibly high from the trail, but that is the eventual destination for this hike. At the top the trail climbs over the ridge, and a million-dollar view to the north is the reward for the effort. The pink cliffs of Bryce Canyon can be made out on a clear day, and several of the levels of the Grand Staircase are apparent from this vantage point.
