Description
East Rim Trail is a 21-mile out-and-back trail located in Zion National Park. The trail starts at the East Entrance Trailhead, climbs to the east rim, and drops into Echo Canyon. The trail starts at the East Entrance Trailhead, climbs to the east rim, and drops into Echo Canyon. With panoramic views of Zion Canyon, you'll see Angel's Landing, the Great White Throne, Cathedral Mountain, Cable Mountain, and Weeping Rock, among other notable features. There are narrow canyons, colorful cliffs, and high elevation ponderosa pine forests on this challenging, yet scenic hike. The turnaround point is within the heart of Zion Canyon at the Weeping Rock Trailhead. Through this trek the elevation ranges between 4,400' and 6,700' with an overall gain of 4,266'. You can complete the East Rim Trail as a day hike or as an overnight backpacking trip (see below for more information on camping and permits). It is a popular trail for runners, hikers, and backpackers. WATERStave Spring is a seasonal water source that is located along this route. It is usually dry by early summer. Visitors should plan to bring enough food and water to sustain their hike. Visit the national park's website for a more comprehensive list of water sources.WHEN TO VISITSpring and fall are the best times to hike this trail. In winter, the trail is typically covered in snow, which may persist until early spring. During the summer the trail can be extremely dry and hot. PERMITS AND CAMPINGThere are no established campsites along the East Rim Trail, however the park still requires a permit for overnight backpacking.
