Tumalo Creek Trail

Shevlin Park is a stunning 980 natural space located near Bend. It was donated to the community in 1920, and is a now a gem for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and enjoy. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Shevlin Park is to hike the Tumalo Creek Trail through the heart of the park. The trail is just over 2 miles one way, and can also be combined with the park's other trails including the Shevlin Loop Trail.You'll begin from the parking area and follow the signs toward the trail. The trail then follows the babbling and beautiful Tumalo Creek upstream for 2 miles. Along the way you'll pass through some beautiful Ponderosa Pine forest and enjoy the stillness and tranquility of the area.Toward the far end of the trail you'll pass through Fremont Meadow. This is an important historic site. On December 4th, 1843 John Fremont (along with Kit Carson, Billy Chinook and 25 other men) spent the night in this meadow during an expedition of the American West.The Tumalo Creek Trail continues onward into the Deschutes National Forest and turns into the Lower Mrazek Trail, but a good turnaround point is when you reach the junction with the Shevlin Loop Trail, a ways after Fremont Meadow.You can then turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead on the Tumalo Creek Trail or, if desiring a change of scenery, take the Shevlin Loop Trail or Fremont Road Trail back. You can't go wrong either way!
