Fremont Road Trail

Shevlin Park is a stunning 980 natural space located near Bend. It was donated to the community in 1920, and is a now a gem for outdoor enthusiasts to explore and enjoy. The easiest way to experience the beauty of Shevlin Park is to hike the Fremont Road Trail through the heart of the park. The hike is just over 2 miles one way and follows the closed road the entire way which makes for easy walking. It can also be combined with the park's other trails including the Shevlin Loop Trail or Tumalo Creek Trail.You'll begin from the parking area and follow the paved road through the gate. The trail then follows the road for the reminder of the distance through the park. Along the way you'll pass through some beautiful Ponderosa Pine forest and enjoy the beauty of Tumalo Creek nearby.Toward the far end of the trail you'll pass through Fremont Meadow. This is an important historic site. On December 4th, 1843 John Fremont (along with Kit Carson, Billy Chinook and 25 other men) spent the night in this meadow during an expedition of the American West.The final section of the road is unpaved and ends at the junction with the Shevlin Loop Trail. If you wish, the hike can be continued onward into the Deschutes National Forest via the Mrazek Trail.Otherwise, this is the turnaround point. If you don't wish to retrace your steps you can return to the trailhead via the Tumalo Creek Trail or Shevlin Loop Trail for a change of pace and scenery.
