The Rough Hill Trail begins at the Sandy Bottom Recreation Area off PA-87, just north of the Loyalsock Creek crossing. From the parking area, follow the trail as it climbs steadily through a mix of hardwoods and hemlocks. After crossing the highway carefully, the route gains a low ridge and begins a gradual climb toward a Y-intersection that marks a split in the route. Stay right to reach a lower overlook with views across the valley and surrounding forested ridges. The trail continues uphill to a higher vista offering wide views of the Loyalsock Creek valley and distant ridgelines, including Smiths Knob — especially scenic during fall foliage or at sunset.
The upper section includes brief but steep terrain, with some rocky footing and narrow ledges that call for attention and good footwear. From the high point, the route descends through thickets of mountain laurel and pine groves before rejoining the trail at the Y-intersection. Wildlife encounters, including timber rattlesnakes and ticks, are possible in warmer months. There are no reliable water sources along the route, and camping is not permitted directly on the trail. This short day hike in Loyalsock State Forest rewards hikers with dramatic scenery and quiet forest travel.
