Loop
Starting from the Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve trailhead off Carlin Street, this route forms a gentle loop through diverse terrain including pine barrens, wetlands, and rare serpentine barrens—one of the few ecosystems of its kind in New York. From the trailhead, follow the main trail into the forest and navigate a series of signed junctions to complete the loop in either direction. Trails are wide, mostly flat, and easy to follow, though sections may become muddy after rain.
This area offers excellent birdwatching, especially during migration seasons, and hikers may also spot deer among the tall grasses and thickets. Dogs are allowed on leash, and benches along the way offer quiet spots to rest and observe the pond and forest edges. With no natural water sources, be sure to carry what you need. Despite its urban surroundings, this preserve provides a peaceful, natural experience within New York City.
