Description
A simple hike through the wilderness to a beautiful mountain lake, the Heart Lake Loop is a perfect trail for anyone looking for a taste of Montana's natural beauty. Hikers take off from the Indian Meadows Trailhead along the Mainline Trail, passing through young pine and aspen forest along relatively flat terrain. The trail gradually climbs before the first junction with the Heart Lake Trail, where hikers can either head directly to the lake, or continue onwards to the second junction with the trail and make it a loop. Be on the lookout while you go for deer, elk, eagles, and bear, all of which frequent the area during the warmer months and into the fall. The trail is open to both hikers and stock, and is heavily trafficked during the summer, so be courteous and remember to share the trail. The Heart Lake Trail itself offers spectacular views, well-maintained campsites, and plenty of fishing opportunities to day hikers and backpackers alike. There is a restroom available halfway along the lake, as well as one at the trailhead. For a longer hike, the Heart Lake Trail meets up with the Lone Mountain Trail midway along its path as well, and heads up and over the mountain and back to Indian Meadows. This is a great way to experience both lakeside relaxation and mountain vistas in a single hike. DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From Lincoln take MT-200 East approximately 6.5 miles to Copper Creek Road. Turn left onto the road and follow signs for Copper Creek Campground/Indian Meadows Trailhead, about 8 miles. At the fork in the road, take the righthand road and continue on until the Indian Meadows Trailhead. There is ample parking and separate stock trailer/stock parking, as well as a restroom at the trailhead. Follow signs for Mainline Trail for the starting point of the hike.
