There and Back
If you are killing time waiting for a tour at Scotty's Castle or just want a decent view of the Grapevine area, take a hike up to where the famed Death Valley Scotty was buried. This short 0.5-mile hike leads you around the clock tower and up a small hill to overlook the castle facilities and Death Valley National Park. Scotty's grave and a plaque dedicated to him sit at the top along with a bench to enjoy the views. On the way back down, be sure to take a stroll through Tie Canyon. This area is essentially a graveyard for all the materials and machines used to build and maintain the property. This three-quarter-mile loop takes you through piles and piles of railroad ties and old rusted out vehicles. The ground is flat and walking is easy going. The trailhead for these two trails is near the picnic area in the parking lot.
