Cottonwood Canyon Road

Cottonwood Canyon Road is a 21-mile out-and-back trek along a primitive dirt road located in Death Valley National Park about 3.5 hours from Las Vegas, NV. This scenic backcountry road begins at Stovepipe Wells and winds through open desert terrain making a gentle ascent towards the Cottonwood Mountains. Although the road is accessible to high clearance, 4x4 vehicles, it has minimal traffic and makes for a surprisingly beautiful and pleasant trek. The dirt road provides access to the popular Cottonwood and Marble Canyons and is a popular location for trail running, hiking, and backpacking. Starting from Stovepipe Wells, the dirt road winds its way into the Cottonwood Mountains. From the foothills, a gentle ascent leads up this winding dirt path surrounded by deep canyons, jagged rocky peaks, and dramatic cliffs. The views become more grand and expansive the higher up you go. WATERVisitors must bring and carry all necessary water. SEASONS: Late Spring to Early FallOctober - May are the best times to visit this area. It is best to avoid this route during the summer months due to the extreme heat and lack of shade (Cottonwood Canyon Road is fully exposed to the sun).CAMPINGDispersed camping (camping outside of a campground) is allowed starting at 8 miles away from Stovepipe Wells on Cottonwood Canyon Road.
