Eolus Group

5.0 (3 Ratings)
Mount Eolus and North Eolus are the western pair of the Chicago Basin fourteeners and together form one of the most satisfying two-summit days in Colorado — a Class 3 scramble up Eolus's northeast ridge followed by an exposed ridge traverse to North Eolus that puts you on two 14er summits with vertiginous drop-offs on every side. The approach is the same as all Chicago Basin routes: a narrow-gauge steam train to Needleton and a six-mile hike through the Needle Creek canyon. The summits reward you with views into the remote heart of the Weminuche that no road in any direction reaches.

Description
Eolus Group begins at the Needleton train stop (~8,212') on the Animas River, reached exclusively via the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango. Follow the Chicago Basin Trail northeast up the Needle Creek canyon approximately 6 miles to Chicago Basin (~11,000'). Establish camp in the lower basin — camping in the upper basin is not permitted. From camp, follow the Twin Lakes Approach trail toward the Eolus col. The route to Mount Eolus leaves Twin Lakes and heads northwest, ascending a rocky slope to the northeast ridge of Eolus. The ridge is Class 3 on generally solid rock with good handholds; routefinding is straightforward in clear conditions. Reach the summit of Mount Eolus (14,091'). From the summit, traverse east along the narrow connecting ridge to North Eolus (14,134') — this Class 3 ridge traverse has exposure on both sides and requires careful movement. Return from North Eolus to Eolus, then descend the northeast ridge back to the basin. Return to Needleton via the Needle Creek drainage. Confirm the D&SNG departure time before leaving camp.
History & Background
The Eolus Group earns its name from the Greek "Aeolus," or "ruler of winds." Hikeers will most likely find this fitting.
