There and Back
The Chicago Basin 14er Grand Slam begins at the Needleton train stop (~8,212') on the Animas River, reached exclusively via the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango.
Follow the Chicago Basin Trail northeast up the Needle Creek canyon approximately 6 miles to Chicago Basin (~11,000'). Establish camp in the lower basin — camping in the upper basin and Twin Lakes area is not permitted. From camp, follow the Twin Lakes Approach trail east to Twin Lakes (~12,500'). The recommended summit order is Sunlight and Windom first, then the Eolus Group — this puts the most technical terrain under the freshest legs. From Twin Lakes, ascend southeast to the Sunlight/Windom saddle. Summit Sunlight Peak (14,065') via the exposed Class 4 summit step — do not attempt in wet or iced conditions. Return to the saddle and climb northwest to Windom Peak (14,065') via the Class 2–3 northwest ridge. Descend to Twin Lakes. Head northwest toward the Eolus col and ascend the northeast ridge of Mount Eolus (14,091'), Class 3. Traverse east on the exposed ridge to North Eolus (14,134'), Class 3. Return via the northeast ridge, then descend to camp via Twin Lakes. The return to Needleton retraces the Needle Creek canyon. Confirm the D&SNG departure time before leaving camp — missing the last train requires an unplanned overnight.
