Description
Green Mountain delivers on its name, with wildflower-decorated meadows and miles of evergreen forest. But this trail's biggest draw is perhaps its fire lookout, constructed in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. From atop this 6,500-ft. perch, the views over Glacier Peak Wilderness are unparalleled. The trail begins in Douglas fir forest, immediately climbing for the first 2 miles. At this point, the trail drops 100 feet to a couple of ponds (a good spot for a snack break) before climbing the remaining 2 miles to the summit. After breaking out of the trees, meadows burst with summer wildflowers and fall berries. Wildlife is common here too - listen for marmots and pika in the distance. Though the final push can be a slog on hot summer days (bring plenty of water and sunscreen), you'll be well rewarded at the top. Green Mountain boasts excellent views of remote Glacier Peak from its fire lookout catwalk.
