Description
If you choose to climb, Clark Springs Trail #40 begins in open chaparral near Granite Basin Lake and follows a nearly straight course to the southwest. It then climbs continuously through ponderosa pine forest to the Clark Spring area. From here, the trail climbs higher through ponderosa, pinyon pine, and Gambel oak to the pass between Two Rock Mountain and Little Granite Mountain where it meets Little Granite Mountain Trail #37. From here, there are good views of the San Francisco Peaks. If you want to descend the Clark Springs Trail, you'll have to earn it via a climb up Little Granite Mountain Trail #37 off Iron Springs Rd. The upper part of the trail clings to steep side hills and there are several sharp switchbacks. Lower, the trail straightens out a bit and is still a fun descent. At the bottom, take a right on Trail #261 to get back to Granite Basin. The Clark Springs Trail #40 provides campers at Granite Basin Recreation Area with a day trip along an attractive riparian corridor to Clark Spring. This is not a heavily used trail. It is likely you wont see another soul if you're out on a weekday. Restrooms are available at the trailhead in Granite Basin.
