Regional Classic
A must do route for the area handpicked by local experts.
The gate at the experiment forest building is closed until June 15th. Expect snow up high into July.
Path Type
There and Back
Park at the closed gate without blocking the road. Hike the 3 remaining miles of forest road until it turns into a singletrack trail in the woods. This trail heads more steeply upward, making its way toward the lake through thick forest. There are a few creek crossings long the way. Once you reach the treeline, the lake will come into view. Nestled in an alpine bowl near the upper limit of the forest, St. Louis Lake provides sublime views over the valley and a rim of bald peaks. Take your time to explore along the shore, lounge on the rocks, and take a swim if the weather is warm. This is a popular backpacking destination, and you'll find backcountry campsites distributed around the lake.
