Description
Park at the small lot for Urad Lake. Part 1: Hike past the yellow gate barrier and up the gravel road to the top of the damn. Then it's an easy downhill slope to the back of the lake. The road hits a sharp lefthand switchback at the southwest end of the lake. When you get to that point, keep heading east over a small rise and look for the singletrack heading NE into the trees. When you see the USFS sign-in box you'll know you're on the right path. Two large beams made crossing the creek a breeze. Part 2: This middle section has several steep switchbacks as you climb up the south side of Red Mountain. Look for a large patch of aspen, and as you leave them heading west, the grade decreases and the hard part is over. Part 3: You'll continue through tall pine woods. The trail is not bad but continually riddled with basketball-sized rocks to navigate around. As you come to the large stream on the left, you are almost to the lake. The ground starts to level out and there is a large 30' boulder sitting in the middle of the trees. Turn to the left, and the lake may be partially obscured by low brush. There is a log pile to cross the stream, and you have made it.Enjoy the solitude.
