The Mammoth Rock Trail can be accessed from either end. The lower end starts from Sherwin Creek Road (0.8 mile from Old Mammoth Road). The upper end starts off Old Mammoth Road (below its intersection with Lake Mary Road).
The trail contours along the mountainside, rising gently as it passes below Mammoth Rock--a limestone and marble formation. The Mammoth Rock Trail Connector and the Meadow Trail Connector both feed into the main Mammoth Rock Trail.
Hikers might start from the Town Loop Trailhead or Mammoth Creek Park near the intersection of Old Mammoth Road and Mammoth Creek Road. This adds about a mile of flat hiking along Sherwin Creek Road to get to the lower trailhead.
