This route begins at the Eagle Lake Wildlife Sanctuary parking area on Causeway Street in Holden, MA. From the trailhead, stay right at the first three junctions to follow Appleton Loop, then Pipeline Trail, and finally Alder Loop. These linked trails create a gradual progression deeper into the sanctuary, weaving through mature oak and hemlock forest, stone walls, and shaded corridors of mountain laurel. After completing the loop via Alder Trail, turn right twice to follow Pipeline Trail in the opposite direction, reconnecting with the far side of Appleton Loop. Stay right again to return to the trailhead. Most of Pipeline Trail passes through private property, please be respectful and stay on the trail.
The full route offers an easy walking experience with occasional muddy patches, subtle elevation changes, and segments that follow Eagle Lake and Asnebumskit Brook. Birders often spot chickadees, woodpeckers, and nuthatches along the way, especially in the quieter forested sections. This connected route is a solid choice for day hikes near Worcester, especially for those looking for a peaceful walk through mixed forest and pond-edge terrain.
