Loop
Starting from the parking area along Goodnow Road in Princeton, MA, this route begins on the West Trail, which follows a historic section of the old Goodnow Road bordered by high stone walls. After a short distance, turn onto the Chapman Trail and continue through mature forest. At a signed junction, take a quick right onto the Glacial Boulder Trail, then turn left onto the Brown Hill Loop. Follow the loop briefly before turning right onto the Summit Trail, which climbs steeply over rocky terrain to the open ledges atop Brown Hill. From the summit, broad views stretch across the surrounding sanctuary and central Massachusetts.
After enjoying the summit, descend to reconnect with the Brown Hill Loop. Continue past mixed hardwoods and rocky outcrops until reaching Otter Pond, where hikers may spot river otters, frogs, and waterfowl in the wetlands. Just beyond the pond, turn onto the Birch Trail and follow it through a quiet stretch of forest back to the trailhead. This easy route rewards hikers with scenic views and a glimpse into the natural and cultural history of central Massachusetts. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially on the rocky summit trail. No pets are allowed, and a sanctuary admission fee applies for non-members.
