There and Back
The trail to Saddle Peak begins at the Middle Cottonwood Creek Trailhead, just northeast of Bozeman in Gallatin National Forest. The route follows Middle Cottonwood Creek through a mix of dense forest and open meadows, climbing gradually at first before steepening near treeline. At a major junction partway up the canyon, turn right to continue toward the Saddle Peak ridgeline. Wildflowers are abundant in early summer, along with wildlife sightings, including moose, elk, and black bears are all possible throughout.
Above the junction, the trail becomes rockier and more exposed. The final ridge to Saddle Peak is narrow, with sections of loose rock and steep drop-offs. This Class 2 terrain requires careful footing and confidence with mild exposure. There are no reliable water sources beyond the lower forested section, and snow often lingers on the upper trail into early summer. Be prepared for fast-changing weather and high winds along the ridge. For hikers seeking a high-alpine experience close to town, this is one of the most scenic summit routes in the Bridger Range.
