There and Back
The Middle Cottonwood Trail begins at the end of Middle Cottonwood Road north of Bozeman and follows Cottonwood Creek through dense lodgepole pine and fir forest. The route climbs gradually at first, crossing several small creeks before steepening as it gains elevation toward the high basin beneath the Bridger Range. After a steady ascent, the trail opens into grassy alpine meadows with broad views of the surrounding peaks.
Further up, the grade increases over rocky terrain before reaching the junction with the Bridger Foothills Trail. From here, hikers can return the way they came or continue along the ridge for a longer point-to-point option. This is a multi-use trail that also allows dirtbike access. Expect loose footing and occasional snow patches early in the season. Moose and black bears are occasionally seen along the drainage. This route rewards the effort with expansive views and a true backcountry feel close to Bozeman.
