Description
The Evans Canyon area lying just north of downtown Reno is a popular area for mountain biking, hiking and trail running. Many trails and paths intersect and crisscross here, allowing trail users to create a route with their desired amount of distance and elevation gain. The Evans Canyon / Miner's Trail Loop is one of the most-used trails of the network. The trail has a moderate elevation gain and an option to cross a cutoff and reduce your total distance by about 1.5 miles. The first portion of the trail leads through a disc golf course and past the Basque Monument, dedicated to the sizeable Basque sheepherder population that settled in Northern Nevada. After continuing through an intersection point with several other trails, the loop trails follow on either side of Evans Creek through dry sage-dotted hills and past mine tailings piles sitting throughout the hills. A short and steep spur trail climbs to the "N" that is visible from town, and coyotes, mine shafts, and technical mountain bike runs can all be found in the above hills by those willing to venture off the beaten path. Park for free at the back of the Reno Sports Complex parking area. The trail is located behind the gate at the parking area's northwest corner. An outhouse, but no water, is available at the trailhead.
