Loop
Beginning at the Smarts Brook Trailhead off NH-49, this moderate backcountry route forms a wooded loop through the lesser-traveled western edge of the Sandwich Range Wilderness. Start north on the Pine Flats Trail as it winds gradually through mixed hardwoods and moss-covered terrain. After a short climb, turn right onto the Yellowjacket Trail to enter denser spruce forest. Continue southeast as the trail narrows and winds along rolling forest floor, with occasional glimpses of low ridgelines through the trees. At the next junction, cross Smarts Brook at a reliable water source. The crossing can run high in early season or after storms, so proceed with caution. Follow Smarts Brook Trail briefly before connecting with the Tri-Town Trail heading west. This path follows gentle grades through peaceful, shaded forest with scattered glacial erratics and intermittent streambeds. The route rejoins an old forest road, which you’ll follow back toward the Smarts Brook Trail to close the loop.
This route is ideal for hikers seeking solitude, wildlife sightings, and a quieter hiking experience away from busier summits.
