Description
From the trailhead at the Roaring Brook Campground, keep right past the Helon Taylor Trail and follow the well-beaten path along Roaring Brook. The trail is relatively rocky and is a definite workout as you hike up to the Chimney Pond Campground. The trail is in very good shape; it is obvious that the park has committed workers to keep their trails in great shape. From the end of the trail at Chimney Pond Campground, you can access Dudley Trail, Saddle Trail, or Cathedral Trail, all of which lead to the Katahdin summit (although Dudley's approach will be via the Knife's Edge). Be sure to check in at the ranger station before heading off higher on the mountain, however. I would suggest bringing water and sturdy hiking footwear, because the trail can be pretty rocky and rooted at spots. In the spring, or after a rain, prepare to get wet! The trail can get pretty saturated pretty fast. All in all, a great hike in a great place. It has great views of Katahdin and of the surrounding North Maine Woods!
