At 4,003 feet, Mount Tecumseh just barely surpasses the mark to qualify as a New Hampshire 4,000-footer. Despite being ranked last in order of height on the NH48 list, this trail is still a treat. During the summer, many people opt to do a loop hike from the Waterville Valley Ski Area, using a rocky trail and the ski slope. The less-traveled, easier-on-the-knees option is to ascend from the Tecumseh Trailhead, accessible by vehicle from the seasonal Tripoli Road during the warmer months. This trail maintains a gradual grade that is relatively soft underfoot for most of the way. There are a few short, steeper sections as the trail ascends the ridge and the final pitch to the summit. Keep an eye out for changes in the vegetation and signs of moose activity as you ascend. Upon reaching the summit, youall find a sign and a large cairn as well as a limited view of the White Mountains to the north and east, including Mount Osceola, Mount Tripyramid and Mount Washington in the distance. Return the way you came or spot a car at the ski area to make it a more interesting loop.
