Description
Located in the Sierra Nevada, Lake Italy is a high alpine lake named for its shape. The mountain is located in the John Muir Wilderness at an elevation just above 11,000 feet. It can be accessed via Pine Creek Trail and the Lake Italy Pass, or as a 12.2-mile, out-and-back side trip from the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) / John Muir Trail (JMT), as described here. Located at mile 870.5 of the PCT northbound / mile 94.5 of the JMT southbound, the Lake Italy Trail heads east. Located in a landscape of rocks and cliffs, Lake Italy is surrounded by several mountains with elevations exceeding 13,000 feet (Mount Hilgard, Mount Gabb, and Mount Julius Caesar). The area features patches of green grass and small sand beaches with scenic views at the water's edge. This side trip is ideal for thru-hikers that are seeking some solitude and wish to explore a desolate lake in a strikingly beautiful landscape unlike anything else along the PCT or JMT. CONSIDERATIONSIn contrast to the PCT/JMT, parts of the Lake Italy Trail are rocky, rugged, and poorly maintained. This trail is recommended for hikers with some backcountry experience. No campfires above 10,000 ft. This is an active bear area that requires proper storage of food, trash and scented items. For more information about how to store your food and what qualifies as a bear proof container, please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/recreation/?cid=fsbdev3_003846.WATERWater that is collected from streams, rivers, and lakes should be treated before consumption. CAMPING AND PERMITSWilderness permits are required for overnight camping and can be reserved up to six months in advance through www.recreation.gov. PEAK BAGGINGLake Italy offers easy access to Mount Hilgard and Mount Gabb, which are often climbed together. For more information please visit https://www.summitpost.org/mount-hilgard/154554.
