Description
Doris Lake has an interesting and unique quality. The lake just so happens to be fed by one of the hot springs in the area, which helps keep the temperature hovering around 70 degrees. Because of its comparatively warmer waters, the lake has been a popular summer swimming hole for visitors to Mono Hot Springs for years. Contained by large granite cliffs and slabs, Doris Lake is well suited for lounging a few summer hours away, whether you are soaking up the Sierra sun on a warm chunk of granite or considering one of thrilling cliff jumping possibilities. The trail to Doris Lake is one of the main day hikes leading out from Mono Hot Springs Resort/Mono Hot Springs Campground. The mile-long trail crosses into the Ansel Adams Wilderness, weaving through Jeffrey pine, Sierra juniper, and some impressively large granite formations. Near the halfway point hikers will encounter a junction with a sign pointing toward Tule Lake. Continue straight for Doris. If you are not already staying at the resort or campground, park in the campground lot located to the left after you enter the resort grounds. The trailhead is located on the far side of the bathhouse. Road access is by way of Kaiser Pass Road, and seasonal access is dependent on snowfall. Take caution in driving the 10-mile one-lane twisty stretch beyond Huntington Lake, as it contains multiple blind corners. Large RVs and trailers are not advised.
