Description
Graveyard Fields is a loop trail directly off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in a valley at the base of Mount Pisgah that connects to trails such as the Art Loeb Trail. It's unknown how the location gained its name, but it is thought that extensive logging in the area left only tree stumps that resembled grave stones. The trailhead begins in the parking area, which has spectacular views of the valley below. Public restrooms can also be found at the trailhead. There are two separate paths to complete the loop. One trail begins by winding down a paved path to the main bridge over Yellowstone Prong (the river running through the valley), and the other is more natural and bypasses Second Falls on its way to Upper Falls. The loop is roughly 3.2 miles long and is good for most skill levels. The trail is very muddy in portions, and there are many spur trails that can be confusing, so bring a map or GPS. At Upper Falls there is a small pool for wading at the bottom of the falls and lots of spaces to rest on the rocks and watch the water flow by after a nice hike. Spring and fall are the ideal times of year to visit due to the colorful foliage and wildflowers that spring up in the valley. Bear canisters are required for camping in the areas around Graveyard Fields.
