Description
Devil's Courthouse is a prominent landmark just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This mountain has a sinister look that may have helped contribute to its name, but more likely the name spurs from a legend that the devil held court in a cave here. Regardless of how it was named, Devil's Courthouse offers spectacular views and is an easy short hike for those road tripping along the parkway. The trail begins by paralleling the parkway as it heads toward the Devil's Courthouse Tunnel. The trail then veers off to the right and begins climbing somewhat steeply. Towards the top the trail turns from pavement into a normal tread that is quite rocky in areas. Eventually the trail comes out to an overlook.Spectacular views abound from the overlook. Mount Hardy is prominent, and several other 6,000 foot peaks can be seen including Richland Balsam and Sam Knob. Be sure to stay within the confines of the observation area as Peregrine Falcons nest here on the cliffs below. If you are lucky you may even catch a glimpse of one of these spectacular birds of prey.
