Description
This 3.5 mile hike provides stunning views and a tour of Chattanooga's rich Civil War history. Begin by parking at the small lot above Sunset Rock. Note that parking is very limited here and if the lot is full you may need to park at Point Park (for a fee) and start the trail from there. Once parked, follow the trail down to Sunset Rock where you'll be met with amazing views. You also may find a crowd here as it is quite the popular spot. Continue along the Sunset Rock Trail until it intersects with the Bluff Trail in a short distance, then take a right. The Bluff Trail traverses along the side of Lookout Mountain underneath many spectacular bluffs. You'll often find rock climbers here as this is one of the best destinations in the area. Dozens of different routes (mostly trad & single pitch) can be found here, as well as bouldering. The trail continues passing underneath these bluffs until it nears Point Park. At the junction you'll see a steep staircase leading up to the park as well as a sign informing you that you're about to enter a fee area. After climbing the staircase and entering the park you'll come to Ochs Overlook and a fantastic view of the Tennessee River and downtown Chattanooga. After enjoying the view, follow the paved path as it loops around the 10 acre memorial park. It's easy to lose track of time here as there are many informative plaques and memorials to look at. The largest monument in the park is the New York Peace Memorial. The state of New York erected this impressive memorial as a tribute to peace and reconciliation between Union and Confederate veterans after the war. When finished exploring Point Park, return down the staircase and follow the Bluff Trail back to Sunset Rock.
