There and Back
This is a cool place to visit. It takes you to an extremely dry, desolate, and remote overlook of Bruneau Canyon where you are 800 feet above the river. This is part of the high plains of Idaho and is at the tail end of the Bruneau Rivers journey through wild Bruneau Canyon. The drive is about 19 miles from the tiny town of Bruneau. The last 3 miles are on a well graded dirt road but you may need high clearance and 4x4 in inclement weather. There is a large sign marking the parking area. Even at this point the canyon looks like little more than a scar in the flat desert. The hike to the overlook is only a couple hundred feet. There is one paved way for wheelchairs and other perspectives along the rim with guard rails that you can walk to. It's a really spectacular view! Bruneau is the deepest gorge for its width in the USA. I don't think that that particular stat applies to this part of the canyon though. The river is very popular as a multi day trip for rafters and kayakers. We saw several. There were also flowers and lizards everywhere that we enjoyed seeing. If you hike along the rim to the south we found a spot that allows you to take in the entire turn of the canyon that you are looking at. I found the view here better but there are no guard rails so be careful! You will return the same way you came.
