Patterson Mountain via Lawler Trailhead

A wonderfully rewarding hike, the Lawler Trail to Patterson Mountain is a terrific option for a day hike with several camping options for those considering a summit sunset or some stargazing. The trail begins gradually and climbs through a vibrant forest filled with rhododendron, which bloom in June. It then enters an old-growth forest with large Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). The path continues past the overgrown Lone Wolf Meadow and a marshy spring before a fork in the trail. Continuing on the left fork will soon bring you to the Lone Wolf Shelter, a terrific place to set up camp for the night. The shelter was originally used by mounted rangers and was reconstructed, using historically accurate materials, in 2004. Past the shelter the trail climbs a series of long, gentle switchbacks toward the summit of Patterson Mountain. The summit itself provides some views, but continuing past the true summit and through a meadow in the saddle, suitable for camping, leads to an outstanding cliff-top view of the Lookout Point Reservoir. On a clear day the Three Sisters can be seen in the distance. A bench here commemorates the life of Roland Vilett, who was an advocate for the areas trails and member of the local Disciples of Dirt organization.
