Description
Originally discovered by timber prospectors, Pinard Falls was only known to locals willing to venture off the beaten path. Luckily the falls became accessible by formal trail in 2007, making it the first new trail in the Umpqua National Forest in 12 years. Part of the Row River drainage, the 105-foot Pinard Falls is the result of water from the Layng Creek forcing its way through a notch in the surrounding basalt before plunging into the pool below. The trail begins by following an old logging road before beginning a moderately steep descent toward the falls. Like nearby Moon Falls and Spirit Falls, the trail here can be quite muddy; waterproof shoes or boots are recommended. A bench situated near the falls is a perfect place to contemplate the beauty of this unique and beautiful waterfall. Those willing to scramble down a particularly steep and muddy section of trail can gain another vantage point of the falls below. As part of the Layng Creek Watershed, which supplies water to nearby Cottage Grove, no camping or swimming is allowed along the watershed.
