Mossy Cave

As one of the few maintained trails in Bryce Canyon National Park that lies outside the ampitheatre area, the short and accessible trail to Mossy Cave offers classic Bryce views and some interesting variety. At its end, Mossy Cave is an oddity in an arid landscape. Formed by a spring, its sheltered nature means green mosses grow year round, while in the cooler months the cave houses an impressive collection of icicles. They continue to grow as long as the temperatures remain below freezing. From the trailhead along Highway 12, the trail weaves alongside a creek, which feeds into the Sevier River. As you crisscross the stream on the short stroll to the cave, you will be treated to views of hoodoos and arches up both sides of the valley. Turret Arch is most pronounced on the northern side of the trail, with the picturesque Little Window coming into view as you make the final ramp up to the cave. Note: While the trail is short, it can ice over and become slippery in the winter. In the summer, be sure to bring water as there's no drinkable water available.
