Description
Lionas Head is one of the few peaks in the Taconic Range in Connecticut. A part of the larger Appalachian Mountains, the Taconic Mountains get their name from a Lenape word meaning ain the trees.a While most of the hike is indeed in the trees, near the summit is a rocky viewpoint. From the parking area on Bunker Hill Road, the trail starts relatively flat before becoming steep for the last half mile. Be sure to respect the landowners and stick to the trail. This is an easy feat, as private property signs are as abundant as the blue blazes officially marking the route. About halfway to the summit, the white-blazed Appalachian Trail joins the blue trail. Follow the white blazes to the viewpoint, where expansive views of the Berkshires and Salisbury, Connecticut, await. The Appalachian Trail can be followed another 3 miles further from Lionas Head to nearby Bear Mountain, the highest peak in Connecticut.
