Description
Start in Frisco on the Mount Royal Trail, and head up. You can ditch a car or bikes at the end of the RxH in Breckenridge- do a car shuttle or take the free Summit Stage bus. This North to South direction is most common as you knock off the hardest climb first, but going South to North could be fun too.Take the first climb easy- 3,500 feet over 3.3 miles to summit peak 1. Don't be fooled by the nice views atop Mt. Royal, you're only about half way up peak 1 at that point! Look around for friendly mountain goats at the summit then continue on to peak 2.Peak 2 to Peak 3 is the crux of this hike, staying high on the ridge gives you fun class 3 and 4 scrambling, but you can usually always descend a little lower for class 2 routesPeak 3 to 4 is less technical, but stay vigilant of that exposurePeak 4 and on is smooth sailing, enjoy the beautiful meadows as you cruise along Peak 5, 6, 7 and 8. Be aware of the CT - Segment 7 (Miner's Creek Trail) crossing the ridge between peaks 5 and 6. It's tempting to get on this singletrack, but following it for too long will pull you West and down towards Copper Mtn Resort. Maintain the highest part of the Ten-Mile range by bearing left when CT - Segment 7 pulls right. From Peak 9 you can easily see the final object: Peak 10. Dig deep and march on! Two options to summit peak 10: straight up the scree field on the north ridge of Peak 10, or drop down to the jeep road east of Peak 10's summit and ascend the jeep road. The former is quicker, but requires careful stepping to avoid rolling rocksFrom peak 10, descend! Hopefully you've planned this section of the hike and downloaded a map: it's challenging to pick your way down the best trail/road/drainage to your car or bike. Regardless of your exact route, it's 5-6 miles of downhill pounding, enjoy!
