The Bear Spring Mountain Loop Trail begins at the West Trout Brook Road trailhead and winds through the forested ridges of the Bear Spring Mountain Game Management Area. Heading west from the parking area, the trail climbs gradually through mixed hardwoods before reaching a junction—stay right to follow the loop counterclockwise. After a short distance, the route traverses a ridgeline with occasional rocky sections and steady elevation gain. Primitive campsites are scattered throughout the area, especially near the midpoint of the route.
After passing through several lightly trafficked drainages and crossing intermittent streams, the trail curves east and descends gradually toward East Trout Brook. From this area, continue east along the access road as it climbs again and follows the ridgeline to eventually reach a connector trail heading west. Follow that trail to return to the starting point. While the route does not reach the Launt Pond shoreline, a short side path near the eastern edge of the loop offers access to the recreation area. Expect potential wildlife encounters—deer, turkey, and black bear are common here—and be prepared for active hunting seasons in fall. This is a versatile trail ideal for quiet day hikes in the western Catskills or as part of a short overnight backpacking trip.
